Moving is one of the most stressful things to deal with. There is so much we need to do, and more often than not, even when we think we have planned it well, when it comes to moving day we just end up shoving everything we can into boxes or throwing a ton of things in the garbage. At a time like this, being conscious of the environment may well take a back seat. How, then can we prepare to move and at the same time be conscious of the impact we might be having on the environment?

There are a lot of steps we can take long before we relocate. We may find that by putting some of these steps into practice even if we are not moving, our lives can feel a bit more organized.

This is a very obvious statement, but the less we have, the less we will have to move. Periodically go through items you no longer use. This is a good time to decide what to do with them, because you have the time to think carefully about it. On a stressful moving day, items like this, might just end up in the trash.

Try to recycle your unwanted items. Organize things you no longer need into piles for recycling or even a yard sale. By doing this far ahead of time, you will minimize the stress later on.

Dispose of potential hazards in a responsible way, for example chemicals, paint cans, unwanted electronics, light bulbs, batteries etc. should all be properly disposed of and not just thrown in the garbage. There are a lot of places nowadays where these types of unwanted things can be taken to. You might want to call your local environmental agency who can tell you the best thing to do.

So, while moving can be a terribly stressful experience, simplifying ahead of time can help alleviate some of the stress.
